This prayer holds distinctive importance and is accepted to have diverse advantages for those who recite it frequently. To fully understand this Mantra, you need to explore everything including its significance, associated legend, and right way of reciting Mangal mantra.

Significance and Meaning of Mangal Mantra

Red coloured Mars or Mangal, as referred to in Hindu mythology and astrology, possesses a dominating presence as the closest planetary body to Earth. It exerts a vigorous influence as the seventh largest planet within our solar system. Due to its characteristic red-orange appearance, this celestial entity has come to be known as the Red planet. When considering the subject of Astrology, planet Mangal reigns supreme amongst the heavenly beings because of its unparalleled energy and powerful impact upon the destiny of mankind.

Lord Mangal is hailed by many names such as Angaraka, which refers to its radiant glow like a burning coal, and Raktavarna which means one whose skin is the shade of blood. The colour red is strongly tied to its identity, leading devotees to offer donations of scarlet items every Tuesday. Placating this planetary deity helps ensure one benefits fully from propitious Mangal placements while remedying unfavourable ones. Angaraka is portrayed bearing arms that encompass a trident, mace, lotus and spear while robed in crimson and often mounted upon a ram.

Representing intense masculine qualities, Mangal or Mars symbolises strength, dominance, courage and conviction. It epitomises the most robust aspects of masculinity including physical vigour, bold leadership, fearlessness in battle and an indomitable spirit. Understood to be the offspring of Bhuma, the earthly avatar of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Varaha (the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu), planet Mars or Mangal reigns as one of the Navagrahas (the nine celestial bodies).

Reciting prayers to this planetary body is said to relieve one of debt, sickness and poverty. It bestows property and transport. Worship on Tuesdays through chanting of Sama Veda hymns pleases Mangal, whose influence over this day can be negated through twenty one consecutive weekly fasts.

Legend associated with the Worship of Lord Mangal

An old woman in the village had faithfully observed the Mangal fast every Tuesday for many years, chanting prayers to please the lord of Mars. Her only son, a young man named Mangaliya, was her greatest joy and companion.

One fateful Tuesday, Lord Mangal himself arrived at their home unannounced, curious to test the depth of the woman's devotion. He appeared as a visiting Brahmin, dusty from travel, and said to the woman "I have walked far and am hungry. Please allow me to use your home to prepare a meal, though I must insist upon cooking my food upon a surface properly anointed with cow dung as is my tradition."

The pious woman hesitated, explaining it was against her religious observance to handle cow dung on a Tuesday. As an alternative, she offered to simply sprinkle water so the ground might be made clean. But the disguised deity would not be dissuaded. Finally the woman said "I am bound by dharma to offer you hospitality, but I cannot break my fast. My son Mangaliya will let you use his back instead, if it pleases you." Though grieved at the request, she called her son. The Brahmin lit his fire upon the willing young man's back and cooked his meal, to the woman's mounting distress. But when all was done and the food prepared, to their amazement Mangaliya stood unharmed.

The visitor revealed himself as Lord Mangal, praising the woman's devotion and faith. "Through kindness and compassion, your heart remains pure. May you both know continued happiness," he said, and was seen no more. And so the powers of Mangal worship and its blessings were made clear.
